About Sheridan Brown Antiques:
Sheridan Brown began working with second hand furniture and antiques in a small garage located in East Hawthorn in 1975. Sheridan soon outgrew the space, moving to larger premises and over the last 34 years, has employed a variety of specialised craftsmen and women.
Striving for perfection and wishing to use traditional methods of restoration, Sheridan Brown and his team, now have a new workshop and showroom at 420 Burke Road Camberwell, Melbourne (Melway reference 59 H 4).
Each piece taken into our
workshop is treated as an individual item, with all work options being thoroughly discussed with our clients before
commencing work. Should our clients expectations about
results be unrealistic, inappropriate or even risk devaluing the item, we take the
time to advise and discuss accordingly. There are often correct restoration or conservation requirements to be considered with many individual pieces.
We offer considerate and empathetic advice for
options or alternatives for those special pieces inherited from family
or friends. For sentimental reasons clients may choose to proceed
with work that
may cost more than the piece would achieve if it were then sold once
restored - Wendy & Sheridan Brown have done this to a few of their
own pieces and not all were of sentimental value! So long as you have a realistic expectation of results and value, our clients can make an informed choice.
From time to time we gently inform a
client that the item's sentimental value is higher than the monetary value, but once again, if given honest opinions at the outset, our clients are able to make informed decisions.
The flip side are the clients bringing in items for restoration feeling that 'it's probably not worth much but we'd like to get the work done' who are often pleasantly surprised. That 'little chest' for instance could have a surprising value when restored correctly.
Requesting restoration of an inherited item,
even if it's disliked or has no use once completed, is not a good reason for doing an item up. In this
instance we generally suggest ways they could perhaps alter the item or change their perception for how the item could be used. We've been known to suggest a client hand over to another relative or sell an item and to then buy something else to
better remember that person by. Just because you've inherited it does not mean you have to live with it!
